Chapter Twenty-Two
It feels like I'm getting ready for prom versus a first date. Amanda is standing behind me with a curling iron in one hand and a can of hairspray in the other. Hope, who just joined the party about an hour ago, is applying lip gloss to my lips. It's non-stick, too, which she says is perfect for kissing (I blush scarlet at the thought of kissing Conner, even though I've never wanted to kiss anyone more). My hands are sitting in my lap, and my fingernails have been coated in white nail polish. Amanda and I went and had them professionally done a few hours ago and, as promised, I paid for it. It was much cheaper than the dress and the dinner she paid for last night, but I feel better that I paid for something. I want her to know how appreciative I am of everything she's done for me. I've said it again and again, feeling like I just haven't said it enough.
I say it again. She just smiles and says, "It's my pleasure, Lauren. Seriously. I love doing this kind of stuff. I might not look it, because every time you see me I'm covered in marinara sauce. But I love to do makeovers." She picks up a bobby pin and puts it between her lips, then tugs at a portion of my hair and slides it in. I wince slightly. I hate bobby pins. They always end up digging into my scalp. But I don't say this to Amanda, who is working on my hair like an artist works on a painting.
My eyes glance at the clock, and my stomach tightens. Fifteen minutes. He's going to be here in fifteen minutes. I take deep, soothing breaths in attempts to steady my nerves. I've been doing this all day, but the closer and closer it gets to five o'clock, the harder it is for me to remain calm. He hasn't texted me a single time today, so I still have no idea what we're doing on this date. But whatever we're doing, I feel confident I will look good. I haven't looked in the mirror since Amanda and Hope started making me over, and I realize I'm putting a lot of faith in them. But they seem to know what they're doing, so I'm just letting them take the reins.
Ten minutes before five and I hear the doorbell ring. My eyes widen. That must be him. No one else would ring the bell like that. A wave of horror washes through me as I hear my dad announce he's getting the door. No! I wanted to be the one to answer it! But seeing as I'm unable to get out of this chair at the moment, I really have no choice. My heart is pounding like a drum in my chest. It's happening. This is really happening. And he's early. I'm not ready. Why am I not ready? I know he has a certain habit of showing up early.
